If you want to spend less and save more, it pays to become aware of hidden resources most don’t know about — and then use them.

By training myself to replace money with other solutions in order to get what we couldn’t afford, I discovered all kinds of wonderful resources. Libraries are one of these resources: they may not advertise it, but many offer a variety free items besides books. Because these other services aren’t promoted, it’s worth asking library staff what else they lend.

I recently found out that our library runs a “seed library” from February through September, where patrons donate and pick up all kinds of free and seasonal vegetable, herb and flower seed packets. Current seed bundles include “taco,” “salad,” “pizza,” and “beginner”.

Many libraries also lend museum passes for regional museums and the nearest metropolitan museums (New York City, for us). These admissions can cost up to $100 for a family of four, but are free with a library card and pass. Recently we visited the Intrepid Space Museum and space shuttle for free (normally ~$30pp).
